• Panicking captain's last words

The captain was desperately trying to get back into the locked cockpit of the plane that investigators believe was deliberately crashed into the French Alps last week, killing all 150 aboard, a German newspaper reported Sunday. Data from the cockpit recorder initially has the captain shouting "For God's sake, open the door", as passengers' screams can be heard in the background, Bild reported. French officials say the plane's black box voice recorder indicates that Lubitz, 27, locked the captain out of the cockpit of the Germanwings jet and steered Flight 4U 9525 into a mountainside.

Five years ago I walked out in the middle of my South African political thought tutorial in absolute outrage after the whole class and the white tutor agreed that Cecil John Rhodes was a great leader. Many white apologists have come forward to "condemn" white racist, patriarchal, paternalistic, unoriginal responses to the Rhodes Must Fall movement.

  • Mercedes to enter the bakkie war - IOL Motoring

Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to enter the mid-sized pick-up market before this decade is out and South Africa has been mentioned as one of its key markets, along with Latin America, Australia and Europe. Mercedes-Benz sees strong sales potential in this one-ton segment and the new entrant will be positioned at the premium end of the Hilux/Ranger/Amarok battle ground, and will be developed by the Mercedes-Benz Vans division. There will be a fine balancing act to achieve here as MB Vans head Volker Mornhinweg expects the bakkie to offer a “high level of utility” as well as the comfort, safety and design attributes that one would expect from a Mercedes passenger car.

  • SA’s visa requirements ‘hurting tourism’

THE Department of Home Affairs’ "draconian" regulations for foreign tourists have led to a drop in numbers from key markets such as China and India, the Southern African Tourism Services Association (Satsa) says. Last year, home affairs said foreign visitors would have to appear in person to apply for visas to have biometrics taken. In September to December last year, the number of tourists from China fell nearly 50% and those from India were down 15% year on year. Tourist numbers from Brazil fell 37%, but this was largely due to concern about the Ebola virus, Satsa said.

The daughter of Angola’s President José Eduardo dos Santos, she is worth $3bn and is Africa’s only female billionaire as well as its youngest billionaire, according to Forbes. Dos Santos declined to comment, but she is widely seen as a symbol of Angola’s status as one of the most corrupt countries in the world — "graft on a scale never before seen in Africa", says Angolan journalist Rafael Marques de Morais.

Julius Malema in the flesh does not easily bring to mind an athlete. The EFF Central Command Team, while they keep many secrets, make no secret of their tactics. The first and most obvious (to say nothing of the crudest, in purely political terms) was the SONA Showdown, live on TV, beamed into millions of South African living rooms. It went off without a hitch, by which I mean it went off with many hitches, and that’s exactly what the EFF had hoped for.
