• Vavi joins EFF as interim head | Daily Maverick

During a shock press conference called overnight by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), President and Commander in Chief Julius Sello Malema said that he would step down from his leadership roles with immediate effect in order to fight a slew corruption charges regarding the non-payment of taxes. In his stead, recently fired former Cosatu Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi will take over both roles on an interim basis. Vavi has a reputation for calling lengthy press conferences in which he says nothing, but on this occasion the information spilled out at a near supersonic rate. “We are a Marxist-Leninist Fanonian party,” Malema stated.

  • Germanwings: New video shows last seconds before crash

A video showing the chaotic final seconds on board the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps last week has been discovered near the site, Germany’s Bild daily reported on Wednesday, saying it had seen the footage. The video was found on a mobile phone belonging to one of the passengers killed on the flight when German pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately flew into a mountain, said the paper. The scenes seen on the video were chaotic and very wobbly, said Bild, adding screams and shouts of “My God” could be heard, indicating the passengers knew what was happening. Prosecutor Brice Robin, who is handling the case in France, said none of the mobile telephones collected at the crash site had been sent for analysis.

  • EDITORIAL: SA scores an own goal

ONE thing that can be said about Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba: when he takes a view, however misguided, he stands firm. In the case of new visa regulations, SA is only just starting to count the cost in terms of lost tourist visits, particularly from fast-growing markets such as China and India. It is not clear what problem Mr Gigaba was trying to fix when he introduced the regulations last year, but they have proved controversial. There has been blanket condemnation from the tourist industry, in particular of the demands for extra documentation for child travellers, and the requirement that tourists apply for visas in person.
